SOLMUKOHTA 2004 CALL FOR ARTICLES AND PRESENTATIONS
Solmukohta 2004 is a convention for Nordic and European role-players, organized for the 8th time. The Solmukohta team will publish a book on the theory and practice of role-playing before the convention. The event and the book will focus on live-action role-playing, but more generic articles and presentations are welcome as well. The topics of the book include Core Theory of Role-Playing, Game Design, The Other and Role-playing Cultures.
Core theory includes descriptive models of role-playing; game design covers tools, typologies and other normative theories; the other deals with the subject of self, immersion, character and thoughts on other-ness; and finally role-playing cultures are defined by their subject matter, diegetic cultures and real-life role-playing culture comparisons.
The book will also be divided into two sections; one including academic texts and theories, and other reserved for visions, new openings and opinions. The articles in the academic section are expected to cite and to build on previous academic works. The articles in the openings-section need to be understood without earlier knowledge. This is recommendable for the academic texts as well.
The persons wishing to publish an article in the Solmukohta book, should submit an abstract (around 500 words) of their article. All abstracts will be reviewed by a board, which will select the articles to be published. When the chosen authors are asked to write the complete article, the board will provide them with a brief commentary on the abstracts. For the contributions to the academic section, the authors are asked to mention some of their key references.
The Solmukohta organizers try to provide the authors of the book an opportunity to present their ideas in the convention. The convention presentations should include at least a brief synopsis of the article, as well as a chance for discussion with the audience. The presentations are expected to be understood without reading the articles.
The deadline for the abstracts is in the end of October, when they should be sent to solmukohta-book@larp.fi. The abstracts should be submitted in English, though the editors may arrange the translations for the final articles in special cases. The authors will receive the specific submission guidelines after submitting the synopses, when asked for the complete works.
In addition to the printed book, the Solmukohta team may publish a free digital version of the book in the internet after the convention.
Requests for further information should be sent to the editors, to the address solmukohta-book@larp.fi. More information about the convention can be found from www.larp.fi/solmukohta.
